Yamaha Ténéré Extreme

Yamaha Europe has released details of the most off-road capable Ténéré yet, with the ‘Extreme’ version getting uprated suspension, a massive 260mm ground-clearance and off-road-specific accessories.

Joining the standard Ténéré, which has become a favourite with adventure riders around the globe, and the recently released World Raid edition, the Extreme gets a makeover to make it more suitable for riders who enjoy their adventure riding a bit more adventurous.

The suspension has had the biggest upgrade, with golden 43mm KYB upside down forks offering 230mm of front wheel travel, making them more capable of absorbing big impacts. That’s 20mm more than the standard Ténéré, which is already pretty useful off-road, and they’re fully adjustable for handling different conditions.

Combined with a new piggyback shock from KYB that’s also fully-adjustable and also offers an extra 20mm of travel than the standard model, as you’d expect, ground-clearance has been improved with the Yamaha now 260mm from the floor. 

This has meant the saddle has also moved up, although as Yamaha are targeting pukka off-road riders with this model, they should already be used to coping with towering seat heights. So the Extreme’s 910mm saddle shouldn’t be too much of an issue. However, if you were already on tiptoes with the standard Ténéré that features a 875mm saddle, then you’ll probably want to try growing longer legs or give the Extreme a miss.

Further improving the off-road experience, the new model gets lightweight titanium footrest which offer a 35% great surface area for more grip in slippery conditions, plus there’s plenty of protection fitted as standard in the form of a bashplate, aluminium chain guide and radiator protector.

To keep the new model moving when you’re knobblies are picking up dirt, the front mudguard of the Ténéré Extreme is much taller, while another section closer to the tyre but behind the forks stops dirt being flung onto the radiator.

In the cockpit the Extreme gets updates to the new 5-inch TFT dash, with three separate themes including a Rally Raid road book set-up with a trip switch on the lefthand switchgear. Finally, the new model is offered with gold anodised aluminium spoke wheels.
