Indian Motorcycle has unveiled a special-edition Chief Vintage to celebrate the origins of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, with production limited to just 125 units worldwide.

The Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition also forms part of Indian Motorcycle’s 125th anniversary celebrations in 2026. Inspired by the brand’s motorcycles from the 1940s, the limited-edition cruiser will be offered in select markets. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was first held in 1938 and returns to Sturgis and the Black Hills of South Dakota every year during the first week of August. The 2026 event began on August 7 and runs until August 16.

The rally was founded by local Indian Motorcycle dealer Pappy Hoel, who initially combined motorcycle racing with scenic rides. The first event attracted around 200 spectators, with nine riders taking part in the racing. The event has since grown into one of the world’s largest motorcycle rallies. According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, 537,459 vehicles attended the rally across 10 days in 2025.

Mechanically, the Sturgis edition remains unchanged from the standard Chief Vintage. The focus instead is on its distinctive styling and connection to the rally’s history. 21The motorcycle features a two-tone red and cream paint scheme covering its 15.1-litre fuel tank and sweeping fenders. A special headdress-style logo on the tank draws inspiration from the badges used on Indian motorcycles during the era.

Each motorcycle is individually numbered beneath the brown solo seat, further emphasising its limited-production status. The ’56’ graphic on the side panel is also a nod to the hand-painted racing numbers used by competitors during the early years of the Sturgis event.

With just 125 examples being produced, the Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition combines Indian Motorcycle’s 125th-anniversary celebrations with the history of one of America’s most famous motorcycle gatherings, making it as much a collector’s item as a traditional American cruiser.
