After being discontinued in most markets, the popular Suzuki SV650 could make a return to the company’s middleweight line-up for 2027.
First introduced in 1999, the SV650 remained in production until 2026, when it was dropped from Suzuki’s middleweight range alongside the V-Strom 650. However, signs of its return have now emerged through an executive order filed with the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
The filing indicates that Suzuki could bring back the SV650 for the European market, with the motorcycle expected to use the same 645cc V-twin engine platform as the recently introduced SV-7GX. That model was unveiled at last year’s EICMA show in Milan, giving some indication of where Suzuki could choose to reveal the updated SV650.
The shared engine platform could also mean similar performance figures. The SV-7GX produces a claimed 72.4bhp at 8,500rpm and 64Nm of torque at 6,800rpm, suggesting the returning SV650 could adopt a similar state of tune.
The connection with the SV-7GX also raises the possibility of an EICMA debut for the SV650. However, Suzuki has yet to confirm when or where the 2027 model will be officially revealed, so its return remains unconfirmed. It is also unclear whether the SV650 will receive any significant styling changes compared with the previous-generation motorcycle. While the engine platform appears to be the key link with the newer SV-7GX, there is currently no information about how closely the new model will follow the styling of its predecessor.
Beyond the SV650, there have also been rumours of a sportbike variant using the same engine platform as the SV-7GX and potential new SV650. If it materialises, that model would further expand Suzuki’s middleweight range around the 645cc V-twin platform.
