Yamaha unveils XSR900 Deus Ex Machina edition

  • Inspired by 1970s endurance racers
  • Comes fitted with ice riding capabilities
  • It is a one-off and unlikely to go on sale

Yamaha has taken its retro triple, the XSR900, into an entirely different territory with a one-off sideways ice racer, built in collaboration with Deus Ex Machina.

This latest creation continues a long-standing partnership between the two brands, which has previously produced standout builds like a 1970s-inspired Yamaha XJR1300 endurance racer and a custom Yamaha XV950 sidecar setup.

Visually, the ice racer leans heavily into motorsport inspiration. It features a single-seat layout with additional number boards, finished in a white and pink colour scheme inspired by classic 1990s motocross machines like the Yamaha YZ125 and Yamaha YZ250. Practical changes include the removal of front and rear lights and pillion pegs, along with added grip tape on the sides of the 14-litre fuel tank to help the rider maintain control on ice.

The biggest transformation, however, comes from the wheels. The bike runs metal-studded Continental TKC80 tyres mounted on standard 17-inch rims, essential for traction in extreme icy conditions. Further enhancements include a metal radiator guard and a robust bash plate that wraps around the underside of the engine, extending towards the exhaust catalysers for added protection.

Overall, this build showcases how the XSR900 platform can be pushed far beyond its road-going roots, blending custom craftsmanship with extreme riding capability.
