Limited-Run Aprilia RSV4 Obscure Spe.Ed. Revealed

Aprilia has introduced a new range-topping version of its RSV4 superbike called the Obscure Spe.Ed. Limited to 500 numbered examples, the special edition combines carbon-fibre components, mechanically adjustable Öhlins suspension and aerodynamic technology derived from the brand’s MotoGP machinery. It also introduces carbon-fibre leg wings to a road-legal production superbike for the first time.

Positioned above the standard RSV4 and RSV4 Factory, the Obscure Spe.Ed. is developed primarily with track riding in mind, although it remains road legal and retains its pillion seat and footpegs as standard. It follows a series of exclusive RSV4 models, including the track-only X-GP revealed in 2025 and the X250TH, limited to just 30 units and introduced in March 2026 with MotoGP-derived carbon brakes and 236.7bhp.

Unlike those more specialised machines, the Obscure uses the standard 217bhp engine and is produced in a larger run of 500 units, although Aprilia has yet to announce pricing.

Its most distinctive feature is a pair of carbon-fibre leg wings borrowed from Aprilia Racing’s RS-GP MotoGP bike. According to the manufacturer, these increase rear downforce by 20%, helping improve rear tyre grip. The wings replace the pillion footpegs when fitted, with a separate silencer bracket included in the kit. They work alongside the aerodynamic wing package introduced on the 2025 RSV4 Factory, which was developed in a wind tunnel and is claimed to reduce straight-line drag by six per cent. Aprilia also points to its history of introducing aerodynamic wings to production superbikes with the 2018 RSV4 RF LE.

Weight reduction is another major part of the Obscure’s development. It gets BST carbon-fibre wheels, claimed to be more than 2kg lighter than the forged aluminium wheels on the RSV4 Factory. Carbon fibre is also used for the mudguards, side panels, footrest guards and front brake cooling ducts, replacing the conventional plastic components.

As a result, the Obscure has a claimed kerb weight of 201kg with a 90% fuel load, making it 3kg lighter than the Factory. Fit the optional full Aprilia Racing Technology exhaust system, complete with a carbon SC-Project silencer, and that figure drops further to 196kg.

The engine itself remains Aprilia’s 1,099cc, 65-degree V4, producing 217bhp at 13,000rpm and 127.4Nm of torque at 10,800rpm in standard form. With the optional racing exhaust, output rises to 220bhp and 131.5Nm. The standard figures match the 2025 RSV4 Factory, which gained three additional horsepower through larger 52mm throttle bodies and a Euro5+ exhaust system. Aprilia describes the Obscure as the world’s most powerful type-approved production superbike.

Interestingly, Aprilia has opted for conventional Öhlins suspension rather than the semi-active system fitted to the Factory. The Obscure uses a fully adjustable 43mm NIX front fork and a TTX piggyback rear shock, allowing riders to make mechanical adjustments to suit changing track conditions and preferences between sessions. The same approach was used on the X-GP and X250TH.

Braking hardware carries over from the Factory, with Brembo Hypure monobloc calipers gripping 330mm discs. The aluminium frame also retains its adjustable headstock position, engine height and swingarm pivot, giving riders further scope to fine-tune the chassis setup.

Electronics are equally comprehensive, with the full Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) package included as standard. It offers six riding modes, split between three road and three track settings, alongside cornering ABS, adjustable traction control, wheelie control, engine-brake adjustment and a quickshifter. The Track Pack, which adds launch control, a pit limiter and slide control, and the Race Pack, offering corner-by-corner electronic adjustments, are both standard equipment. A GPS lap timer and the fourth-generation Aprilia MIA connectivity system are included as well.

Visually, the Obscure Spe.Ed. adopts an all-black finish combining gloss and matte paintwork with exposed carbon-fibre sections. The dark treatment extends to the frame and swingarm, while each motorcycle receives its own name and serial number laser-engraved into the headstock.

Aprilia has yet to confirm pricing or availability in New Zealand.
