Harley-Davidson LiveWire S4 Honcho range production begins

LiveWire has officially begun production of its new S4 Honcho Trail and Street models, marking a potentially pivotal moment not only for the Harley-Davidson sub-brand.

The two new models, first revealed as concepts at Harley-Davidson’s Homecoming festival before making further appearances at EICMA, are now rolling off production lines ahead of their arrival in international dealerships later this year. While their lower price point makes them the most affordable motorcycles in LiveWire’s line-up to date, the significance of the S4 platform extends far beyond affordability alone.

For much of its existence, LiveWire has focused on premium electric motorcycles aimed at enthusiasts willing to embrace cutting-edge technology at a premium price. While those models showcased the potential of electric performance, the broader market has been slower to adopt heavyweight electric motorcycles than many manufacturers initially expected. Increasingly, attention is shifting toward smaller, lighter and more accessible electric machines, and the Honcho appears to be LiveWire’s clearest response yet to that changing landscape.

The timing is particularly noteworthy. Recent developments across the industry have highlighted growing confidence in lightweight electric motorcycles, especially in the off-road and recreational segments. LiveWire’s recent investment in Dust Moto is another indication that manufacturers see significant growth potential in smaller electric machines that can appeal to younger riders and newcomers who may never have considered a conventional petrol-powered motorcycle.

Both the S4 Honcho Street and Trail are classified as 125cc-equivalent motorcycles. Performance figures reflect their intended role, with a claimed top speed of 94kmph and a 0-60kmph sprint time of around three seconds. Power is supplied by two removable battery packs with a combined capacity of 3.48kWh, allowing riders to easily charge batteries away from the motorcycle if required.

LiveWire claims a WMTC range of 85kms, while lower-speed urban riding at approximately 50kmph can extend that figure to around 120kms. Charging from 20 to 80 per cent takes approximately two hours using a standard domestic outlet. While those numbers may appear modest compared to larger electric motorcycles, they align closely with the needs of urban commuters and recreational riders, the very customers these bikes are designed to target.

The Street and Trail variants share the same basic platform but differ in their styling and intended usage. Both feature 12-inch wheels, removable batteries and even a reverse gear, a feature not commonly found on motorcycles in this category. The Trail receives a slightly taller seat height and styling cues that reflect its more adventure-focused positioning, while the Street is aimed squarely at urban mobility and everyday commuting.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the S4 Honcho launch is what it says about the future direction of electric motorcycling. Premium electric motorcycles have struggled to move beyond a relatively small niche audience, despite impressive technology and performance. In contrast, smaller and more affordable electric machines are increasingly emerging as the segment with the greatest potential to attract new riders and expand the overall motorcycle market.

With production now underway through manufacturing partner KYMCO and customer deliveries expected to begin this summer, LiveWire is making a clear statement about where it believes the market is heading. Rather than chasing ever-higher performance figures, the company is betting that the next phase of electric motorcycling growth will come from motorcycles that are lighter, simpler, more affordable and easier to live with on a daily basis.
