Free Motorcycle Training Returns to Hamilton This Weekend

Want to improve your riding skills without spending a cent? Roadsafe Rider is returning to Hamilton this weekend with two completely free motorcycle training days, and having attended these courses myself, I can thoroughly recommend them.

  • Free Roadsafe Rider motorcycle training takes place in Hamilton on 31 October and 1 November 2026.
  • The practical training moves from the kart track to Beetham Carpark this year.
  • All licensed riders can attend with their own motorcycle and protective gear; advance registration is required.

Whether you’ve been riding for six months or 30 years, there’s always something new to learn on a motorcycle. And sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference to your confidence and enjoyment on the road.

That’s why I’m a big supporter of motorcycle rider training, particularly when it’s delivered by people who really know their stuff.

This weekend, Andrew and Lynne Templeton from Roadsafe Rider are returning to Hamilton for two days of fully funded motorcycle skills training, taking place on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November.

And the best bit? It won’t cost you a cent.

Training That Makes a Difference

I’ve attended Roadsafe’s Hamilton training days on a couple of occasions, previously held at the Hamilton Go-Kart track, and found them genuinely worthwhile.

Even after years of riding and testing motorcycles, there’s always something to take away from a day spent concentrating on technique rather than simply getting from A to B.

The courses are designed to help riders improve their confidence and control, with practical exercises covering braking, cornering, counter-steering, low-speed manoeuvring and road positioning.

There’s also a focus on hazard awareness and risk management, with classroom sessions using videos, discussions and real-world riding experiences to explain not just what to do, but why.

It’s all delivered in a relaxed environment where riders are encouraged to ask questions and learn from one another.

A New Venue for 2026

One significant change this year is the location.

Previously, the Hamilton courses were held at the local go-kart circuit, which provided an entertaining and challenging environment for practising motorcycle control.

Unfortunately, the kart track isn’t available this year, so Roadsafe has adapted the programme.

Theory sessions will take place in a conference room before riders head to nearby Beetham Carpark for the practical exercises.

The change also means riders of all experience levels can attend either day, with activities tailored to suit the group.

Who Can Attend?

The courses are open to licensed motorcyclists, from learners and restricted licence holders through to experienced riders looking to refresh their skills.

You’ll need to bring your own motorcycle, appropriate to your licence, along with your normal riding gear.

This isn’t a learn-to-ride or licensing course. It’s designed for people who already ride and want to become more confident and capable.

And you don’t need to be riding a sportsbike or a large adventure machine to benefit. The techniques covered are relevant to just about any motorcycle.

Fully Funded by Local Councils

The training is being provided free of charge thanks to funding from Hamilton City Council, Waipā District Council and Waikato District Council.

It’s an excellent initiative that gives Waikato motorcyclists access to professional training without the usual financial barrier.

With summer approaching and more riders heading out onto the roads, it’s also a particularly good time to sharpen those skills.

A day spent improving your skills is rarely wasted.

How to Book

There are two training days available: Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 1 November 2026.

Places are limited, and riders need to register in advance.

Having experienced these courses firsthand, I’d encourage anyone who can make it along to take advantage of the opportunity. Whether you’re relatively new to motorcycling or have been riding for decades, a day spent improving your skills is rarely wasted.

And when it’s completely free, there’s really no excuse not to give it a go.
