AGV has launched the latest evolution of its flagship racing helmet, the Pista GP R3, which was recently tested by MotoGP riders at the Misano Grand Prix.
The new helmet builds on the foundation of the outgoing Pista GP-RR, while introducing a range of new technologies aimed at improving safety and performance. AGV says more than 100 new moulds were created for new and redesigned components as part of the development process.
The biggest change comes in the form of AGV Sphera, which uses the company’s RLS (Release Layer System) technology. According to AGV, the system can reduce the risk of concussion by six times.
Sphera has been developed specifically to reduce the effects of oblique impacts during a crash. Such impacts can generate rotational acceleration of the brain, which is considered one of the major causes of severe brain injuries.
The Pista GP R3 also features an entirely carbon-fibre shell and meets the latest FIM FRHPhe-02 standards. AGV has also made significant changes to the ventilation system, with the air vents now manufactured from Grilamid, a composite material combining plastic and carbon fibre.
The helmet was put through its first major test in competition at the recent Misano MotoGP round, where riders from the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 classes used the new design.

In the premier class, Aprilia riders Marco Bezzecchi, Luca Marini and Franco Morbidelli all raced with the Pista GP R3. The three riders reported significant improvements with the new helmet, with Bezzecchi also having a particularly personal reason for the new lid to be special to him.
