2027 Yamaha YZ Motocross range unveiled new features

Yamaha has revealed a significantly updated off-road competition line-up for 2027, headlined by a heavily revised YZ250F that receives an all-new engine and chassis. Alongside the quarter-litre motocrosser, the Japanese manufacturer has also introduced major upgrades for the YZ85 and a series of refinements for its YZ65 youth racing machine.

The biggest changes are reserved for the YZ250F, which benefits from a completely redesigned powertrain designed to deliver stronger performance across the rev range. While Yamaha has yet to release official output figures, the company claims the new engine produces more power and torque than before, with the rev ceiling increasing by 700rpm. According to Yamaha, the revised motor offers improved performance across the entire rpm range while introducing a newly developed valve train system.

Borrowing technology from the brand’s flagship road-going superbike, the YZ250F now uses rocker arms derived from the Yamaha R1. The intake valve springs have also been redesigned with a dual-spring arrangement, marking the first time such a setup has appeared on a YZ off-road model. Complementing these updates is a newly engineered camshaft featuring a larger shaft diameter, aimed at improving durability and performance at higher engine speeds.

Beyond the engine itself, Yamaha has reworked the motorcycle’s drivetrain and implemented several weight-saving measures. The new YZ250F adopts the same hydraulic clutch system found on the YZ450F, offering improved clutch feel and increased load capacity compared with the previous design. The system is paired with a model-specific clutch hose developed exclusively for the updated 250cc machine.

The chassis package has also undergone a comprehensive overhaul. Yamaha has equipped the YZ250F with the same frame architecture, suspension components and bodywork used on the larger YZ450F. This effectively brings the smaller motocrosser closer in specification to the company’s premier competition model. The visual updates continue with graphics inspired by the YZ450F, giving the new motorcycle a more unified family appearance.

Elsewhere in the range, the YZ85 receives one of its most substantial updates in recent years. Yamaha has revised both the engine and chassis, with the goal of improving overall rideability and long-term reliability. Particular attention has been paid to the Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS), with revised timing settings designed to boost low-rpm performance and make power delivery more accessible for younger riders.

The YZ85 also adopts a refreshed look for 2027, featuring Yamaha’s latest Icon Blue colour scheme, updated graphics and a newly designed compact handlebar pad. Rounding out the updates is the YZ65, which receives a number of smaller refinements focused on durability and rider comfort. Changes include a redesigned handlebar pad, updated front wheel bearings and a revised seat skin, all aimed at enhancing the experience for younger racers entering the sport.

With significant upgrades across multiple models and a heavily re-engineered YZ250F leading the charge, Yamaha’s 2027 off-road range demonstrates the brand’s continued commitment to motocross and youth competition, while bringing technology and design cues from its flagship machines further down the line-up.
