BMW M 1000 RS in the works

BMW Motorrad is preparing to expand its performance-focused M range with a new motorcycle called the M 1000 RS. The upcoming sport-tourer has been certified for the 2027 model year by both the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), providing the first official indication that the model is moving closer to production.

The M 1000 RS has been certified alongside the M 1000 RR, suggesting that both motorcycles could share the same 999cc inline-four engine. Certification data indicates that the new RS could produce 205hp at 13,000rpm and 113Nm at 11,100rpm, matching the current M 1000 RR.

Despite the shared engine, the M 1000 RS is expected to have a noticeably different character. BMW uses the RS name for motorcycles that sit between outright sports machines and touring models, combining strong performance with greater comfort and practicality for road use.

That focus on usability could also explain the difference in weight between the two motorcycles. The certification documents list an equivalent inertia mass of 280kg for the M 1000 RS, compared with 270kg for the M 1000 RR. The additional weight could be linked to a stronger subframe, improved passenger accommodation and provisions for luggage.

The introduction of the M 1000 RS would also give BMW a performance-focused alternative to its existing R 1300 RS, which is currently the company’s only RS model. Interestingly, there is no indication yet of an S 1000 RS joining the range. BMW is expected to officially unveil the M 1000 RS later this year. An October reveal is possible, although the motorcycle could also make its debut at EICMA in November. Meanwhile, BMW is also developing the M 1300 GS adventure motorcycle, although that model is currently expected to arrive as a 2028 model
