Royal Enfield and Roland Sands unveil Shotgun 650-based custom

  • Named the Reload 650 with Shotgun 650 base
  • Inspired by 1980’s superbikes
  • Updated chassis and handling components

Royal Enfield has teamed up with renowned American custom motorcycle builder Roland Sands Design (RSD) to create a striking reinterpretation of the Shotgun 650. Dubbed the Reload 650, the project explores the potential of Royal Enfield’s 650cc platform when styling, engineering and real-world rideability are developed in parallel.

Rather than building a one-off showpiece destined to spend its life on display, the Reload 650 was conceived as a functional motorcycle that could be properly tested, ridden and used. Developed jointly by Roland Sands Design and Royal Enfield’s engineering team, the project focuses on creating components that integrate seamlessly with the motorcycle while maintaining everyday usability.

The result is a custom machine that takes a more engineering-led approach than many traditional customs, blending performance-oriented upgrades with a cohesive design vision.

Inspired by 1980s Superbikes

Royal Enfield Reload 650

Visually, the Reload 650 draws heavily from the superbike era of the 1980s. The standard Shotgun’s cruiser-inspired proportions have been transformed with a sharper tail section, cleaner side profile and a more aggressive, athletic stance.

The revised silhouette gives the motorcycle a sportier appearance while retaining the distinctive character of Royal Enfield’s twin-cylinder platform. Adding to the performance-focused aesthetic is an S&S exhaust system, which not only enhances the bike’s visual presence but also promises a more engaging soundtrack than the stock setup.

Chassis Upgrades for Improved Dynamics

The transformation extends well beyond styling. Suspension duties are handled by premium Öhlins components at both ends, bringing improved handling capability and a more purposeful stance.

The riding position has also been revised through the addition of custom risers and a straighter handlebar arrangement, creating a cockpit that better reflects the bike’s sportier intent. These changes are aimed at complementing the upgraded chassis package while delivering a more connected riding experience.

Custom Wheels Take Centre Stage

One of the standout features of the Reload 650 is its distinctive gold alloy wheels, designed specifically by Roland Sands Design. Inspired by classic five-spoke Morris racing wheels, the rims contribute significantly to the motorcycle’s retro-performance character. Their gold finish reinforces the 1980s superbike influence while adding a premium visual touch that contrasts effectively with the rest of the build.

Bespoke Components Throughout

Beyond the major modifications, the project features numerous custom-designed components developed exclusively for the Reload 650. RSD has incorporated a ribbed design motif influenced by vintage hot rod culture, which appears throughout the motorcycle. Custom parts include the shift lever, foot pegs and a unique fender strut cover.

Particularly noteworthy is the aluminium fender strut cover, machined from a single piece and engineered to serve a dual purpose as both a styling element and a structural fender brace.
