Honda Finally Unveils the V3R 900 E-Compressor Prototype

  • Comes with a 900cc V3 motor
  • Still a concept, could go into production next year
  • Styling based on the CB1000R

Honda has taken another major step toward bringing its forced-induction V3 engine concept to life, unveiling the V3R 900 E-Compressor Prototype at the EICMA 2025 show in Milan. The futuristic project blends traditional combustion engineering with advanced electronic boosting technology, hinting at how Honda could extend the lifespan of petrol power in the face of electrification.

The prototype first made waves at last year’s Italian motorcycle show as a bare rolling chassis showcasing an experimental V3 engine. Since then, the concept has evolved into a fully realised 900 cc powerplant housed in asymmetrical prototype bodywork and proudly wearing a new Honda badge, one that might feature on a production model in the near future.

At the heart of the machine lies a water-cooled 75-degree V3 engine, designed to deliver the character and sound of a traditional combustion motor while meeting the demands of modern performance. Honda claims the electronically assisted system enables output levels comparable to those of a naturally aspirated 1200 cc engine.

The secret lies in its electronically controlled compressor, which uses an electric motor to drive a turbine that forces denser air into the cylinders. Unlike a turbocharger, which relies on exhaust gases, or a conventional belt-driven supercharger, this system operates independently of the crankshaft. The result is an instant boost without lag, and a more compact overall layout since there’s no need for an intercooler.

This setup offers engineers greater flexibility in engine packaging and cooling, potentially allowing Honda to experiment with new frame geometries or weight distribution. Beyond the technical intrigue, the project demonstrates Honda’s continuing commitment to refining internal-combustion technology even as the industry transitions to hybrid and electric powertrains.

Honda has also confirmed its intention to bring a production model featuring the V3 E-Compressor technology to Europe by 2027, marking the company’s most ambitious innovation in combustion-engine design in years. Interestingly, this isn’t Honda’s first exploration of a three-cylinder V-configuration. Enthusiasts may remember the NS400R from the mid-1980s, a two-stroke V3 that became a cult favourite. The new V3R 900, however, represents a modern reinvention of that spirit, merging heritage and innovation into one forward-looking prototype.
