Honda has pulled the covers off a new CB500 Super Four (CB500SF) at the China International Motorcycle Exhibition (CIMA), following confirmation earlier this year of the CB1000F.
Like its bigger sibling, the CB500SF draws inspiration from the classic CB900F of the 1970s and ’80s. The retro styling, however, is backed up by more than just looks. Instead of repurposing its parallel twin, Honda has given the bike a brand-new inline four-cylinder engine – a rare offering in the 500cc class that places the CB500SF in a more premium bracket.
While official specifications have yet to be confirmed, early reports indicate a 502cc unit producing approximately 80bhp. That output also raises the prospect of an A2-compliant version in the future. The bike will come with five riding modes, a diamond-type steel frame with the engine as a stressed member, and upside-down forks paired with a cast aluminium swingarm. Braking is handled by Nissin, with radially mounted four-piston callipers up front and a two-piston unit at the rear.
In line with Honda’s latest models, the CB500SF will be offered with the brand’s optional E-Clutch system. Unlike a conventional automatic, it retains both clutch and gear levers, giving riders the choice to ride fully manual, semi-assisted, or switch the system off entirely.
The CB500SF made its debut in China, suggesting that market will be first to receive it, alongside Japan. At present, there is no confirmation of a global launch, though anticipation remains high.
