If, like us, you end up with multiple bikes in the shed, it can sometimes be a real hassle moving them around. I’m sure you all know the wiggle backwards and forwards as you try to position a bike with a woefully poor steering lock into position, only to find that when you flick the sidestand out and lean the bike over, the room it requires almost doubles.
We recently started using a set of new Whites Paddock Stands that come with an additional wheel by the handle, which, combined with the main wheels being able to rotate, turns the traditional static paddock stand into a much more useful prospect – a dolly.
The rear paddock stand comes with V-hooks (for bobbins) and L-hooks, meaning they are compatible with a wide range of bikes – not if you’re a bit flash and have a bike with a single-sided swingarm, though – and the bracing makes them good and sturdy. The stands are light at only 6.3kg, yet they’re suitable for up to 200kg in weight each, meaning they’ll cope with most bikes. The front stand comes with a padded mount which sits at the bottom of your bike’s fork legs, supporting the front-end of the bike effortlessly.
We chose the BRM Fireblade as a test unit for the stands, and they both fitted easily, meaning we had the Honda off its wheels and up on dolly wheels within seconds. Once up, a one-finger push is all that’s required to re-position the bike. And once we got it in the required spot, the brakes on the wheels of the dolly make sure it’s not going anywhere once in place.
Obviously, the stands not only make positioning the bike a breeze but also help with maintenance projects like chain lubing and checking tyre pressures. The valve is always in the wrong place when trying to reach it with a pressure gauge, but that’s no longer an issue with both wheels off the floor.
