- The DR-Z4S & DR-Z4SM will replace the legendary DR-Z400.
- Models are expected to arrive in NZ at the end of 2025.
- Overseas launch reports conclude it’s a worthy successor, but will it be too expensive?
It’s been a long time coming, but Suzuki’s all-new DR-Z4S dual-sport and DR-Z4SM supermoto are finally locked in for New Zealand—and they’re bringing the biggest leap forward in the DR-Z family’s long history.
Suzuki Motorcycles NZ has confirmed both bikes will arrive in the final quarter of 2025 with a price tag of $14,899 plus on-road costs. Yes, that’s a hefty jump from the outgoing DR-Z400E’s $10,999, but Suzuki NZ have managed to keep it bang on with global pricing and even undercuts some markets.

From Old-School Workhorse to Modern Tech
The DR-Z400E earned its stripes as a simple, tough, and carb-fed trail bike you could thrash for decades. But time, and ABS laws, caught up. Now, Suzuki’s brought it into the 21st century with fuel injection, traction control, multiple ride modes, and switchable ABS—yet somehow kept the DNA that made the DR-Z a go-to for Kiwi riders.
Both models run a revised 398cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC single, producing around 38hp and 37Nm of torque, fed by a 42 mm ride-by-wire throttle body. Titanium intake valves, hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves, new cam profiles, and dual-spark ignition sharpen up performance and efficiency.
Rider aids arrive via Suzuki’s Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.), giving you three ride modes and traction control with a special “G” (Gravel) mode. ABS can be fully switched off on the DR-Z4S for serious off-road work, while the DR-Z4SM lets you kill the rear ABS for those smoky supermoto slides.

S for the Dirt, SM for the Streets
The DR-Z4S rolls on a 21/18-inch spoked wheel combo with long-travel KYB suspension—280mm/296mm (front/rear)—plus a 270 mm front and 240 mm rear disc. It tips the scales at around 151kg wet, with a tall 920mm seat height. Ground clearance is an equally towering 300mm.
The DR-Z4SM swaps to 17-inch wheels, shorter travel, and a massive 310 mm front disc for tarmac bite. Seat height drops slightly to 890 mm, while weight creeps up to 154 kg.
Both share a new twin-spar steel frame with a bolt-on aluminium subframe, full LED lighting, a crisp LCD dash, adjustable KYB suspension, and a surprisingly small 8.7-litre fuel tank—a nod to the old DR-Z’s short legs that the aftermarket will surely fix in no time.

Pricey, but Still Competitive
In NZ, $14,899 is right in the mix for this class—especially considering the tech and road-legal supermoto option. But, it has to contend with the new crop of contenders in the adventure segment like the CFMoto 450MT at $9,990 and the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 at $9,190. Yep, they’re significantly heavier, but should certainly be more capable for longer journeys than the Suzuki. But when the going gets tough, the Suzuki is sure to have the advantage. A new contender is the eagerly-awaited KTM’s new 390 Enduro R that will land in NZ at $11,139 later this year.
For the SM version, the Suzuki is still looking a little pricey, with the KTM 390 SMC R landing in dealers at $11,139 which has a bit more power (45hp) but is slightly heavier at 161kg ready to ride (or race…).

The Verdict
Suzuki hasn’t just given the DR-Z a facelift—they’ve rebuilt it into a tech-savvy, ABS-compliant, and still trail-capable machine. The DR-Z4S keeps its dirt-first focus, the DR-Z4SM brings back a street-legal supermoto, and both should carry on the DR-Z legacy for another generation. Our only gripe? That tiny fuel tank. But given how quickly the aftermarket will pounce on this bike, expect a big-tank option before your first summer trail ride is over.
The Suzuki DR-Z400 reached legend status in NZ for its reliability and tractor-like performance off-road. Wherever you went, a DR-Z had probably been there before you. If the new version features the same level of reliability and ease of use then we’re sure many rider will be willing to stump up the extra cash. But we won’t find out till we eventually get to ride one when they arrive later in 2025. One thing is for sure – we can’t wait!

Manufacturer Blurb: Features
Engine Key Features
The compact 398cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC dry-sump engine has been refined to improve its torque and responsiveness, achieving an exceptional balance of performance and handling while meeting the latest emission and noise standards.
New camshaft profiles achieve greater intake lift and improved valve overlap, which enhance engine performance while ensuring compliance with Euro 5+ standards.
The cylinder head boasts a new design with optimised intake port and intake valve periphery shapes along with a smooth, flat combustion chamber. This enhancement leads to improved combustion efficiency, providing excellent durability at low loads and strong power output at high loads.
New piston and crankcase designs combine to reduce mechanical loss by up to 20% and contribute to smoother engine operation, increased power output right up to the rev limit, and improved fuel economy.
The engine is fed by a 42mm bore electronic-controlled throttle body that helps achieve a fine balance between idling speed control and power output characteristics
The exhaust system is equipped with a dual-stage catalytic converter that helps satisfy Euro 5+ emissions standards.
Revised air cleaner box and inlet tube design helps reduce resistance, improving low-end torque production and power output.
New radiator with larger fan diameter improves cooling.
The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) features a collection of advanced electronic rider assist functions including:
Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS): The rider can select between three modes that deliver different power characteristics to match the riding conditions. All power modes build to the same peak power.
Mode A provides the sharpest response as the throttle is opened. Tuned to deliver exciting acceleration and fully leverage the engine’s power.
Mode B features a more linear curve with softer initial throttle response, to deliver a satisfying balance of settings that make a good fit for a broad range of riding styles and road conditions.
Mode C gives the softest throttle response and more gentle torque characteristic. This setting is a good choice when riding on loose or otherwise slippery surfaces.
The Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) works as an assist clutch to make the lever easier to pull while transmitting the power output, reducing fatigue.
Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) helps prevent rear wheel spin, enabling you to better control the bike in diverse and varying conditions. In addition to G (Gravel) mode, you can select between two standard on-road modes. Mode 1 is intended for dry paved surfaces, while Mode 2 is intended for wet paved surfaces, taking effect more quickly to be more proactive in limiting wheel spin. You can also opt to turn the system off entirely Note: Traction control is not a substitute for the rider’s throttle control. It cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when entering turns, or while braking. Nor can it prevent the front wheel from losing traction.
G (Gravel) mode allows a limited amount of tyre slip when riding on unpaved surfaces so the bike remains controllable, while at the same time delivering the consistent power output you want for exploring unpaved roads and country trails with greater confidence.
Switchable ABS:The DR-Z4S is the first Suzuki production model that lets you switch ABS OFF for both the front and rear brakes to take full control over braking when riding off-road. Alternatively, you can opt to turn off ABS for the rear wheel alone.
Suzuki’s Ride-by-Wire Electronic Throttle System gives greater controllability over the engine and helps harness that power effectively.
The Suzuki Easy Start System starts the engine with one quick press of the starter button, even without pulling in the clutch when the transmission is in neutral.
