Next-generation BMW S1000RR spotted testing

BMW appears to be well underway with development of the next-generation S1000RR, with a heavily disguised prototype recently spotted testing at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife. While the bike features a striking new aerodynamic package, the latest spy shots suggest the changes extend far beyond updated bodywork.

The most noticeable revisions are at the front, where the prototype sports an all-new fairing with significantly larger winglets than the current model. The design appears heavily inspired by BMW’s Concept RR, although the production test bike adopts a dual-winglet layout with vertical end plates similar to those found on the M1000R.

The prototype also features a redesigned swingarm with a more enclosed construction, suggesting BMW has revised its flex characteristics to improve handling. Spy images further indicate changes to the frame around the front engine mounts, hinting at a substantially updated chassis that goes beyond the revisions already announced for the 2027 M1000RR homologation model.

Further changes include a completely redesigned tail section, pointing to a revised subframe, while Brembo Hypure front brake calipers replace the BMW-branded Nissin units used on the current S1000RR. The test bike also retains semi-active electronic suspension, although internal revisions are expected to complement the updated chassis.

Inside the cockpit, BMW appears to have fitted a much larger TFT instrument display. More notably, the prototype dispenses with the brand’s signature multi-controller jog wheel on the left switchgear, replacing it with what looks to be a production-ready button layout.

Carbon-fibre components are visible throughout the motorcycle, including the front and rear mudguards, air intake, underseat panels and heel guards. While some of these parts may appear on the production bike, others are likely to remain exclusive to M Performance variants.

Power is expected to come from an updated version of BMW’s 999cc inline four-cylinder engine. Although the Concept RR showcased a WorldSBK-derived engine producing more than 226bhp, the road-going S1000RR will continue to use a Euro-compliant version of the powerplant. Any increase over the current model’s 207bhp output is expected to be relatively modest.

BMW conducted testing during a public Nürburgring track event, suggesting the project is no longer being kept under wraps. However, with the 2027 S1000RR already announced, this more extensively revised model is unlikely to make its production debut before 2028.
