Getting a Kiwi onto a grand prix grid takes talent, determination and a fair bit of financial horsepower. Cormac Buchanan has shown he’s got the first two. Now Aaron Slight is calling on New Zealanders to help with the third.
The Kiwi motorcycle racing legend is backing Cormac’s Coffee Club, a new fundraising initiative launching at 10am on Thursday, 22 October, aimed at helping Buchanan contest the 2027 Moto3 World Championship.
The idea is straightforward: supporters contribute the equivalent of a virtual coffee each week to help fund the Southlander’s racing. Those small contributions could collectively make a meaningful difference to keeping New Zealand represented in grand prix motorcycle racing.

“Cormac has already done the hard part,” Slight said. “He’s earned his place through sheer talent, relentless hard work and incredible determination, including fighting back from a fractured back and broken ankle in 2026. Now the challenge is raising the funds needed to keep him on the grid.”
Buchanan has earned the opportunity to return for a third Moto3 season, having continued to demonstrate his potential despite significant injury setbacks this year. Securing the funding to take that opportunity remains a crucial part of the job.

And Slight knows better than most what it takes for a rider from this end of the world to make it internationally.
“I know how tough it was for me to compete at that level and the challenges are so much harder now, so we need to unite behind Cormac,” he said.
“Yes, we’re a small country compared to others he’s racing against, but that makes Cormac’s achievements so far even more impressive because of the hurdles he’s overcome to earn this.”
For Slight, backing Buchanan is about helping turn years of effort into the chance to progress.
“A kid with a dream. We’ve been telling kids for years to dream big and go after it. This kid has, so why don’t we help with his push to get to MotoGP.”

There’s also something rather appealing in it for supporters. Coffee Club members will automatically enter the draw for an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the 2027 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, including economy flights, accommodation and exclusive three-day paddock passes. Monthly giveaways will include Buchanan’s gear and merchandise.
“I might be the only one riding the actual bike but with a team of supporters behind me I can achieve my goal of progressing to Moto2 and beyond.”

That’s a potentially decent return on a virtual flat white.
Buchanan said having Slight’s support—and mentorship—meant a great deal.
“To have someone like Aaron backing me is massive. He knows the sacrifices it takes to compete at this level, and I’m incredibly grateful he’s willing to mentor me,” he said.
