Could this be the new BMW F 650 GS?

BMW Motorrad appears to be developing a new middleweight adventure motorcycle that could slot between the F 450 GS and F 800 GS in its global line-up. A test prototype has now been spotted, revealing several similarities to BMW’s existing GS models, although the final production specification remains unclear.

BMW F650 GS

The prototype appears to use a parallel-twin engine and shares some technical elements with the recently introduced F 450 GS. However, its chassis and braking components appear closer to those used on BMW’s larger adventure motorcycles, including the F 800 GS and F 900 GS. The motorcycle also runs a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination, pointing towards stronger off-road capability than the smaller F 450 GS.

The engine is currently one of the biggest unanswered questions. BMW could potentially use a heavily revised version of the parallel-twin platform found in the F 450 GS. BMW’s partner TVS already uses a significantly reworked version of this engine in the Norton Atlas, where its 585cc configuration produces 70bhp.

It remains unclear whether BMW will use the same displacement or opt for a different configuration. Power could potentially sit in the 65bhp to 70bhp range, although the BMW is expected to have a stronger focus on off-road riding than the Norton Atlas.

The prototype’s chassis provides some further clues about its intended role. It uses a steel bridge frame that appears more closely related to the F 900 GS than the F 450 GS, while the braking system also appears to have been derived from BMW’s larger GS models. Combined with the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, the setup suggests that genuine off-road ability will be an important part of the motorcycle’s character.

The motorcycle is still in the early stages of development, with unfinished bodywork particularly noticeable around the front fairing. However, the headlight appears to feature an X-shaped design inspired by the larger R 1300 GS. Interestingly, the familiar GS beak is missing from the prototype.

BMW has not yet revealed a name for the new adventure motorcycle. If the engine displacement ends up being close to 600cc, an F 600 GS name could make sense, while BMW could also revive the F 650 GS name previously used for its middleweight adventure models.

Given the unfinished state of the prototype, development still appears to be some way from completion. A production version is therefore unlikely to arrive before 2028. If BMW does bring the motorcycle to market, it could eventually compete with models such as the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and the upcoming KTM 690 Rally.
