New Benelli Tornado 550 breaks cover!

Benelli has launched the new Tornado 550 in overseas markets, introducing a fully-faired middleweight sports bike that blends aggressive styling with everyday usability. Rather than chasing outright supersport performance, the Tornado 550 has been designed as a road-focused machine, combining sporty ergonomics, quality cycle parts and a manageable parallel-twin engine.

Developed jointly by Benelli’s Research & Development division and the Centro Stile design team in Pesaro, the Tornado 550 is based on the TNT 500 concept but has been extensively redesigned with full bodywork and a sharper sporting character.

Power comes from a new 554cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine producing 56bhp and 54Nm of torque. The unit is an evolution of Benelli’s previous 500cc twin but now features a 270-degree crankshaft in place of the earlier 360-degree layout, giving it a more distinctive firing order, improved character and a deeper exhaust note.

The engine is housed within a steel trellis frame, where it acts as a stressed member to improve rigidity. Suspension duties are handled by fully adjustable 41mm Marzocchi upside-down forks at the front, offering preload, compression and rebound adjustment, while the rear monoshock is adjustable for preload and rebound. Braking is supplied by Brembo, with twin 320mm semi-floating front discs and a 260mm rear disc.

Benelli claims a kerb weight of 198kg, while the 16.5-litre fuel tank and accessible 800mm seat height should make the Tornado 550 well suited to everyday riding. The ergonomics have also been carefully considered, with clip-on handlebars and moderately rear-set footpegs creating a sporty riding position without placing excessive strain on the rider’s wrists, knees or lower back.

Technology includes a five-inch colour TFT display with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone-based navigation via the Carbit Ride application, selectable Normal and Sport riding modes, switchable traction control and a tyre pressure monitoring system capable of displaying real-time pressure and temperature readings for both tyres.

The Benelli Tornado 550 is available internationally in three colour options: Midnight Black, Tech Silver and Gres White. While Benelli has not confirmed plans for additional markets, the Tornado 550 would be a logical addition to the brand’s line-up. With Benelli already offering scrambler, cruiser, touring and adventure motorcycles in a similar engine capacity, the Tornado 550 would expand its range into the fully-faired sports bike segment without requiring an all-new platform.
