KTM appears close to unveiling a long-awaited KTM 690 Adventure, with recent spy shots showing a near production-ready rally-style prototype undergoing testing on Austrian roads.
The concept of a lightweight, dirt-focused middleweight adventure bike has long been considered a “unicorn” among enthusiasts, something under 175kg, powerful, capable of carrying luggage, and genuinely adept off-road. This upcoming model looks set to answer that demand, with a potential debut expected around EICMA later this year.

Much of the inspiration comes from how riders have already been using the KTM 690 Enduro R, often modified with soft luggage and navigation towers for long-distance trail riding, particularly on routes like the Trans Euro Trail. KTM’s last true factory attempt at this formula was the KTM 640 Adventure, produced between 1997 and 2007.
Visually, the prototype features a new rally-inspired front end, including a tall, clear windscreen, integrated LED headlight, and a substantial navigation tower with a horizontally mounted TFT display. A roadbook holder is also visible, although it may not make it to the final production version. Beyond the front, much of the bodywork appears to be shared with the 690 Enduro R.
Power is expected to come from KTM’s long-standing 692.7cc LC4 single-cylinder engine, which was significantly updated recently. Output should remain around 77.9bhp and approximately 73Nm of torque, keeping it among the most powerful production singles, unless challenged by machines like the Ducati 698 Mono. The LC4 engine itself has a deep heritage, dating back to 1987 when it first found success in European enduro competition, eventually becoming a cornerstone of KTM’s rally dominance before rule changes reshaped the segment.

Chassis-wise, the new model appears to retain the steel trellis frame used across the 690 platform, along with the 18/21-inch wheel setup and long-travel suspension. Expect the same WP XPlor forks and monoshock combination seen on the Enduro R, offering 265mm of front travel and 250mm at the rear, though likely with firmer spring rates to handle added weight.
A major upgrade is expected in fuel capacity. Spy shots suggest a triple-tank setup, combining additional front-mounted tanks with the existing 13.3-litre rear subframe tank. This could significantly extend range, echoing solutions seen on bikes like the Husqvarna 701 Enduro LR. While some may question the absence of low-slung tanks seen on larger LC8c models like the KTM 890 Adventure, the overall package still points toward a highly capable long-distance off-road machine.
As for the name, KTM could revive the “Adventure” badge in line with its heritage models, though “690 Rally” is also a possibility to avoid confusion with its twin-cylinder range. Either way, this is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated dual-sport releases in years.
