KTM Automated Manual Transmission: How does it work?

Joining the bandwagon of AMT technology that already included Yamaha, BMW and Honda, KTM introduced its Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) last year. Like all other AMTs, it is designed to make riding easier without abandoning the familiar mechanical layout of a conventional gearbox. But how does it function?

It is rather simple. Instead of switching to a fully automatic system, KTM’s approach removes the clutch lever and automates gear changes, while still giving the rider the option to take control when needed. The AMT works in two main modes: Manual (M) and Automatic (A). In Manual mode, riders shift gears using either the foot lever or handlebar-mounted paddles, but without operating a clutch. Switch to Automatic mode, and the system takes over entirely, choosing gears based on throttle input, vehicle speed, engine rpm, and load conditions.

Under the skin, the gearbox remains largely conventional, but with the addition of electronic actuators to manage clutch engagement and gear selection. A centrifugal clutch handles take-off and low-speed riding, which eliminates the risk of stalling. As a result, stop-start traffic, tight U-turns, and hill starts become far less demanding.

KTM has also reworked the gear sequence. Instead of the traditional 1-N-2-3-4-5-6 layout, the AMT uses P-N-1-2-3-4-5-6. The added Park (P) position locks the transmission to prevent the bike from rolling when parked, a useful feature given that the centrifugal clutch disengages once the engine is switched off.

Gear changes are handled by an electromechanical actuator governed by the ECU and a dedicated transmission control unit. KTM claims shift times comparable to modern quick shifter systems. In Manual mode, riders retain full control, although an optional high-rev auto-shift function steps in near the redline to protect the engine.

In Automatic mode, the system continuously adapts its shift behaviour to suit riding conditions, prioritising smoother changes in relaxed riding and quicker responses when performance is demanded. In effect, KTM’s AMT blends the efficiency and engagement of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic, while still allowing riders to stay involved when they want to.

While we are yet to get our hands on the new KTM AMT, we have had our fair bit of experience with the Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT. Read the full review here!
