Ever watched riders carving through Hampton Downs and wondered what it feels like to take those same corners yourself? Now you can — no racing licence or track day required.
The Hampton Downs race circuit located just off SH1 in the northern Waikato is arguably one of NZ’s greatest, with the twists, turns and undulations making it a racer’s delight. Home to some of the biggest motor racing events in the country, the venue underwent a $30m upgrade in 2016 under the new ownership of Tony Quinn, with the 4km track able to be run in three different configurations. It’s a great place to ride a motorcycle or drive a car within the confines of a controlled environment.

After seeing huge success with their car-based Track Cruise sessions, where drivers can take passengers for controlled laps around the National circuit, Hampton Downs has launched a version just for riders — the very first International Circuit Motorbike Cruise on November 29.
“Whether you’re a passionate rider or simply looking for a unique experience, our Bike Cruise offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the track in a relaxed and controlled environment while you cruise alongside fellow riders,” explains Stacey Matthews, Membership Manager of Hampton Downs.
For the price of $59, you’ll get the opportunity to do two laps of Hampton Downs’ 4km international circuit (that’s the long one!), with the group of riders kept in check behind a pace car. If you want to get on the track and go hell for leather, then this isn’t the day for you – book a track day. But if you have always wanted to experience what it’s like to see Hampton Downs from the other side of the fence, then this is for you.

Unlike the cars, you aren’t permitted to bring a passenger, and you must have a full NZ bike licence. Your bike must have a current WOF and rego (no race bikes!). And you’ll need to be wearing a helmet, gloves, long-sleeved top and long pants, along with closed in shoes at a minimum.
Sign-in and registration begins at 12pm with a rider’s briefing at 12.20pm before the bikes take to the track at 12.30pm. You’ll want to make sure you book online well in advance though, as chances are this will be a popular event.
Spots are limited, so get in quick — this could be your chance to tick “ride Hampton Downs” off your bucket list. Who knows, it might even light that track-day spark you didn’t know you had.
