Kawasaki has expanded its KLE500 range for 2027 with the introduction of the KLE500 SE Smartride, adding a self-engaging clutch system designed to make stop-start riding easier. The update arrives a year after the model’s initial reveal and brings new convenience-focused technology to the adventure motorcycle.
The new system uses a compact mechanical centrifugal clutch integrated into a conventional clutch assembly. According to Kawasaki, it reduces the need for clutch operation in urban traffic and eliminates the delicate clutch control normally required when pulling away from a standstill.
In practical terms, riders can move off and come to a stop without manually operating the clutch lever. However, the system remains entirely mechanical and does not rely on electronic actuators or other electronic assistance to function.

The Smartride setup also retains the familiar manual riding experience. Riders can continue changing gears using the shift pedal and clutch lever whenever they choose, giving them the option of conventional clutch control while benefiting from the system’s assistance in slow-moving traffic.
Kawasaki’s approach is similar in principle to Honda’s E-Clutch technology, although the two systems operate differently. While Honda uses electrical actuators to control clutch operation, Kawasaki’s Smartride system relies on a mechanical centrifugal mechanism. Alongside the new clutch technology, the 2027 KLE500 SE Smartride also gains tubeless tyres, adding another practical feature to the adventure bike. The new variant is scheduled to become available in a Pearl Blizzard White colour scheme.
