ZXMoto Reveals New 1,000cc Boxer Twin With Shaft-Drive Potential

Chinese manufacturer ZXMoto has unveiled a new project centred around a boxer-twin engine. The engine was first previewed at EICMA 2025, where it appeared only as a computer-generated design. A year later, the company has displayed what appears to be a fully developed and operational engine at CIMA 2026.

The powerplant has a capacity of around 1,000cc, although ZXMoto has yet to release its official specifications. Reports from China suggest it produces more than 100bhp and uses liquid cooling and chain-driven camshafts, following an approach seen on the latest generation of BMW boxer engines.

The engine’s layout is particularly significant. Like BMW’s boxer twins, the ZXMoto unit is mounted longitudinally and features an output shaft at the rear of the engine. This configuration appears well suited to a shaft-drive system, which could eventually be used to drive the rear wheel of an adventure or sports-touring motorcycle.

ZXMoto Boxer Twin

While a 1,000cc boxer twin producing more than 100bhp would not be particularly unusual in itself, the pace at which ZXMoto has developed the engine is perhaps more noteworthy. The company was only officially established in 2024, yet by 2025 it was already displaying new motorcycles at EICMA, competing in racing and winning in the WorldSSP championship while continuing to develop new engines and technologies.

Now, just two years after its formation, ZXMoto has progressed from showing a digital concept of a large-capacity boxer twin to displaying a working engine. Its design also suggests that shaft drive has been considered from the outset, pointing towards a possible new motorcycle platform rather than a standalone engine project.

An adventure bike would be an obvious application, but the engine could potentially support several different models. A shaft-driven sports tourer, road-focused motorcycle or large-capacity naked could all use the same basic powerplant, giving ZXMoto scope to build an entire family around the engine.

For now, the company has not confirmed what motorcycle will receive the new boxer twin or provided final performance figures. However, the progression from a computer-generated engine shown at EICMA 2025 to a working unit displayed at CIMA 2026 shows just how quickly ZXMoto is developing its larger-capacity technology. If the next stage is a shaft-driven adventure motorcycle, the Chinese manufacturer could soon become a new rival in a segment dominated by established European and Japanese brands.
