Yamaha to Use Recycled Aluminium for DiASil Cylinders by 2030

Yamaha plans to replace conventional virgin aluminium alloy with recycled aluminium alloy in the cylinders of its motorcycles and scooters by 2030. The move is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing, with the Japanese manufacturer estimating that the transition could cut annual CO₂ emissions by around 47,000 tonnes.

The change will affect Yamaha’s DiASil Cylinder technology, which the company first developed and introduced in 2002. Yamaha was the first manufacturer to successfully develop and deploy this all-aluminium cylinder design, which eliminates the need for a conventional iron sleeve or additional cylinder plating.

The DiASil system offers several advantages, including strong wear and seizure resistance, efficient heat dissipation and reduced weight. It also improves recyclability and helps lower manufacturing costs, making it suitable for use across motorcycles and scooters.

Until now, however, Yamaha has relied on virgin aluminium alloy to produce its DiASil Cylinders. To change this, the company has developed a recycled aluminium alloy designed to deliver properties comparable to those of its conventional material.

Yamaha expects to complete the transition across all motorcycles and scooters equipped with DiASil Cylinders by 2030. The recycled alloy will first be introduced in commuter models in Indonesia, followed by a phased rollout across global markets.

The initiative marks a significant change in Yamaha’s engine manufacturing process, allowing the company to retain the benefits of its existing cylinder technology while reducing its reliance on newly produced aluminium.
