There are worse places to arrive a day late.

By the time I reached Cascais on Friday, 19 June, the 32nd European Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Rally was already in full swing. Thousands of Harley-Davidsons had settled into the relaxed rhythm of life on Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

It didn’t matter. Sometimes arriving after the crowds have found their feet lets you see an event for what it really is.

Cascais sets the scene

The first thing that struck me was Cascais itself. About 30km west of Lisbon, the former fishing village has grown into one of Portugal’s most attractive seaside towns without losing its old-world charm.

Narrow cobbled lanes weave between beautifully preserved buildings. Cafés spill into shaded squares filled with the smell of fresh coffee and the sound of several languages being spoken at once. The imposing Citadel overlooking the harbour is a reminder of the town’s defensive past.

Then came the soundtrack.

The deep rumble of Milwaukee-Eight engines echoed between the stone buildings as Harley-Davidsons cruised through the historic centre, their riders searching for parking spaces that had long since disappeared. Chrome glistened in the afternoon sun, spectators filled the waterfront promenade, and every second person seemed to be wearing black leather with an embroidered H.O.G. chapter patch across their back.

There are worse places to arrive a day late.

A story behind every patch

Reading those patches became an unexpected pastime. Belgium. Germany. Italy. Spain. Finland. Bulgaria. Switzerland. Portugal. Brazil.

Then there were the stories behind them. One rider wore the colours of the Perth, Western Australia Chapter, although he originally came from Croatia. Another had travelled from Luanda in Angola.

Back at my Airbnb I met Dag, who was sharing the accommodation with three mates from Norway’s proudly named World’s Northernmost Arctic Chapter. Their journey south had taken time, but like everyone else I spoke to, they agreed it was every bit as important as the destination.

New Harleys and local flavour

The rally headquarters stretched along the waterfront, where Harley-Davidson’s Expo showcased the latest 2026 models, including the new Street Glide Limited, Road Glide Limited and Pan America 1250 Limited. Nearby, riders queued for demo rides while others wandered through dozens of trade displays.

Among the merchandise, it was the local H.O.G. chapters that caught my attention. Volunteers from the Lisbon and Porto Chapters were selling beautifully designed T-shirts featuring distinctly Portuguese Harley-Davidson artwork. These souvenirs had genuine local character and quickly became popular with visitors looking for something different from the standard event apparel.

One of the busiest attractions was the H-D Bagger Racing Simulator, where enthusiasts could test themselves on a virtual race-prepared Harley-Davidson. Watching experienced riders wrestle a digital bagger around the circuit proved almost as entertaining as having a go yourself.

Customs in the Citadel

I missed the Custom Motorcycle Show inside the historic Citadel. Judging by the photographs and conversations with those who had been there, it had lived up to its reputation.

Thirty-eight customs competed for honours, with Málaga’s Lord Drake Kustoms taking both Best in Show and the People’s Choice Award for a stunning white-and-gold cruiser. Portugal’s Nene Castellanos collected Best Paintwork with an elegant Chicano-inspired machine, while South Africa’s Paolo Lopes and Spain’s Walter Benitez Alberti were also recognised for their craftsmanship.

Saturday’s Atlantic procession

Saturday belonged to the ride. Before breakfast, motorcycles were already streaming towards Circuito Estoril. More than 2,000 motorcycles assembled before completing a ceremonial lap of the famous race circuit, crossing the runway at Cascais Airport and heading back along Portugal’s Atlantic coastline.

Standing beside the road in Cascais, I watched a procession that seemed endless. Wave after wave of V-twins rolled past against a backdrop of blue ocean, rugged cliffs and cheering spectators. It was a moving celebration of the Harley-Davidson lifestyle.

Every rider had a story. Every chapter patch represented another journey.

The people make the rally

As daylight faded, guitars replaced exhaust notes. Live bands kept the waterfront buzzing until well after midnight, while restaurants, bars and cafés remained full of riders reliving the day’s adventures.

Complete strangers became friends over a beer. Routes were compared. Ferry crossings discussed. Plans for Croatia in 2027 were already taking shape.

And that’s what I’ll remember most about Cascais: the people. Every rider had a story. Every chapter patch represented another journey. Every conversation reminded me that the European H.O.G. Rally is a reunion of travellers who just happen to arrive on Harley-Davidsons.

The next destination is Biograd na Moru, Croatia, in June 2027. But, as always, the real adventure will begin long before anyone gets there.
