A new free app from Kiwi-owned Star Insure is designed to take some of the confusion out of the immediate aftermath of a road accident – and you don’t need to be a Star customer to use it.
Hopefully it’s something you’ll never need, but would you know exactly what to do if you’ve just been involved in a motorcycle accident?
Even following a relatively minor incident, there’s likely to be plenty going on. Adrenaline is flowing, you might be shaken up and, assuming everyone is okay, you’ve suddenly got to think about what details you need from the other people involved, what information needs recording and which photos you should take.
That’s the problem Star Insure is aiming to solve with its new free accident app.

Available to all New Zealand motorists – regardless of whether they’re insured with Star Insure – the app provides a step-by-step guide to what to do and check following an accident.
It also incorporates a capture tool that allows you to record third-party details, take photographs of the accident scene and log other essential information before leaving.
Essentially, it’s designed to provide a checklist at precisely the point when you’re least likely to remember one.
“When you have just been in a ding or a serious collision, your adrenaline is pumping,” says Star Insure Chief Executive Officer Roger Wallace.
“Remembering what details to swap or what photos to take is tough. This app brings calm and clarity to the chaos, ensuring you capture exactly what you need to make the claims process completely hassle-free.”
Particularly Useful For Riders
While Star Insure has launched the app for all NZ motorists, we reckon the concept makes plenty of sense for motorcyclists.
An incident on a bike can leave you dealing with everything from your own condition and damaged riding gear to a motorcycle that might no longer be rideable – all while potentially standing on the side of a busy road.
Having a predetermined list of the information and photographs you need to collect means there’s one less thing to think about.
And because the app isn’t restricted to Star Insure policyholders, there’s nothing stopping any Kiwi rider from downloading it and keeping it on their phone just in case.
“The best part about this tool is that it is available to every single motorist on New Zealand roads at absolutely no cost, regardless of whether they are a Star Insure customer,” says Gabrielle Byfield, Star Insure General Manager Marketing & Communications.
Part Of A Wider Safety Push
The app also forms part of Star Insure’s wider road-safety activity, with the specialist insurer involved with the Street Smart programme, which provides practical driving skills for young drivers.
Star Insure is Kiwi-owned and locally operated, with the specialist insurer covering everything from everyday vehicles through to classics and motorcycles.
The company says the new app is intended to make one of the more stressful parts of having an accident – working out what you need to do next – a little easier.
And that’s probably the best way to look at it: download it now, stick it in your digital toolkit and hopefully never have to open it.
