Yamaha is working on a new XSR900 SP, according to US regulatory filings. The upcoming variant is expected to sit above the standard XSR900 and could bring a range of performance-focused hardware upgrades to the retro-styled roadster.
According to filings submitted to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the XSR900 SP will use the same 890cc, liquid-cooled, inline three-cylinder engine found in the Yamaha MT-09. The engine produces a claimed 117.4bhp, giving the XSR900 SP a strong performance base.
Yamaha has not yet revealed details about the motorcycle’s hardware package. However, the SP badge has traditionally been associated with upgraded components in Yamaha’s range, and the XSR900 SP could follow a similar formula to the MT-09 SP.
If that is the case, the XSR900 SP could receive a 41mm DLC-coated KYB inverted fork along with a fully adjustable Öhlins rear monoshock. Braking hardware could also receive an upgrade, potentially featuring Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers and a radial master cylinder. These changes would give the XSR900 SP a more performance-oriented character while retaining the standard model’s retro-inspired styling and three-cylinder engine.
The new variant is expected to be aimed primarily at overseas markets, with New Zealand potentially among the countries to receive the XSR900 SP. Yamaha has yet to announce when the motorcycle will be officially unveiled or confirm its market availability.
