New Motorcycle Tech: Sena APEX and APEX PLUS unveiled

Sena has introduced the new APEX and APEX PLUS motorcycle communication systems, with both models positioned below the company’s flagship Mesh-equipped communicators. The new devices focus on Bluetooth connectivity while bringing several features usually associated with more expensive systems, including wireless charging, a replaceable battery, AI-based noise cancellation and a glove-friendly control interface.

The standard APEX supports two-way Bluetooth intercom, allowing communication between a rider and pillion or two riders. The APEX PLUS is designed for small groups and supports communication between up to four participants. Both systems claim an intercom range of up to 1.6km in open terrain.

Sena has equipped the APEX range with Bluetooth 6.0, supporting hands-free operation, stereo audio and remote-control functions for features such as phone calls and music. However, neither model gets Sena’s Mesh Intercom technology, which remains a key distinction between the APEX range and the company’s higher-end 50 and 60 Series products.

While Mesh Intercom is particularly useful for larger riding groups, the APEX range appears to target riders who primarily need straightforward communication between two or a few riders. This makes the system a more focused alternative for those who may not need the additional capability of Mesh connectivity.

The control system has also been designed with motorcycle use in mind. A thumb wheel can be rotated or pressed to operate common functions, reducing the need to use several small buttons while riding. There is also a dedicated intercom control and a Quick Pair button designed to simplify the process of connecting nearby headsets.

One of the more notable features is the replaceable battery. Sena’s Modular Sandwich Battery system allows the power pack to be removed from the communicator instead of being permanently built into it. Both APEX models come with a dual battery charger, with charging the removable battery taking around two and a half hours. USB-C charging takes approximately two hours.

Battery life is claimed at up to 20 hours of Bluetooth intercom talk time, while wireless charging is also supported through compatible Qi-certified chargers. The communicator uses a magnetic helmet mounting system, allowing it to be separated from the helmet mount more easily when it needs to be charged or stored.

For audio, Sena has equipped both models with its second-generation 40mm HD speakers. They also feature AI-based noise cancellation, which is designed to reduce unwanted wind and road noise during conversations. The APEX and APEX PLUS have so far been announced for the European market, while further market availability has yet to be confirmed.
