- Announced for the US market

- No changes to engine or features
Yamaha has expanded its R9 line-up for 2027 with the introduction of a bold new Matte Phantom Blue and Fluorescent Red colour scheme, giving the recently launched supersport machine its most eye-catching factory finish yet.
The new colour option has been revealed initially for the US market, where Yamaha has confirmed it will join the existing Icon Blue and Tech Black variants already available internationally. While American riders have occasionally had to wait longer than their European counterparts for certain Yamaha models, or missed out entirely, as was the case with the XSR900GP, the latest R9 update sees the US receiving an exclusive new look for the middleweight sports bike.

The striking paint scheme combines a dark matte blue base with vivid fluorescent red accents, creating a far more aggressive visual identity than the existing colour options. To accommodate the new addition, Yamaha has removed the retro-inspired Anniversary White livery from the US range, ending the availability of one of the model’s more distinctive heritage-themed finishes.
Beyond the fresh graphics package, the 2027 R9 remains mechanically unchanged. The motorcycle continues to be powered by Yamaha’s acclaimed 890cc CP3 triple-cylinder engine, the same powerplant used across several of the brand’s performance-focused models. In US specification, the engine produces 117hp, marginally lower than the 119hp quoted for European-market motorcycles, though the difference is unlikely to be noticeable in real-world riding.
The chassis package also carries over unchanged. Fully adjustable KYB suspension components remain fitted at both ends, while braking performance comes courtesy of premium Brembo Stylema calipers. Yamaha’s advanced electronics suite, derived from technology developed for the flagship R1M, continues to provide a comprehensive range of rider aids designed to enhance both performance and safety.

Since its introduction, the R9 has been positioned as Yamaha’s new-generation supersport offering, combining the characterful CP3 engine with modern chassis dynamics and cutting-edge electronics. The addition of the Matte Phantom Blue and Fluorescent Red finish gives the model an even stronger visual presence and further broadens the appeal of a motorcycle that has quickly become one of the most talked-about machines in Yamaha’s sports bike range.
Whether the new colourway will eventually make its way to other markets remains unclear, but for now it gives American riders an exclusive option that stands out from the more familiar blue, black and white finishes traditionally associated with Yamaha’s supersport motorcycles.
