This year at the Burt Munro Challenge, the organisers are offering riders and race fans the chance to win a $40,000 Yamaha R6 race bike, with this year’s raffle aimed at supporting the next generation of Southland road racers.
The prize is a 2025 Yamaha R6, fully prepared to New Zealand Superbike Championship Superstock specifications, complete with a range of aftermarket race components. Rather than being a showroom showpiece, the bike has been built as a genuine competition machine — ready to be rolled straight into a race garage or enjoyed as a serious collector’s item.
Adding a distinctly Southland flavour, the R6 has been finished as a limited-edition ‘MacAttack’ replica, celebrating the achievements of local star Cormac Buchanan. Buchanan has claimed six NZSBK titles to date, including two Supersport 600 championships aboard an identical Yamaha R6 platform.

Racing heritage meets future ambition
The raffle forms part of the Burt Munro Challenge’s broader commitment to supporting young riders, with funds raised helping Southland racers pursue opportunities on the national and international stage.
Burt Munro Challenge committee chair Bill Moffatt said the initiative strongly reflects the spirit of the event’s namesake.
“The legend of Burt taking on the world from Invercargill is well documented,” Moffatt said. “This initiative gives us a platform to help fuel the dreams of the next generation aiming to do exactly that.”
“Just as Burt chased what many said was impossible and put Invercargill on the world stage in the process, today’s young Southland road racers are pushing boundaries of their own.”
From Burt Munro Challenge to the world stage
Moffatt pointed to Buchanan’s own pathway as proof of what’s possible.
“Cormac started out racing at the Burt and competed across speedway and road racing, and was even our youngest competitor to take on the Bluff Hill Climb,” he said. “Now, just a few years later, he’s about to start his second season in the Moto3 World Championship. It shows what’s possible when you’re determined enough to chase a dream.”
Moffatt added that geography is no barrier when it comes to success in motorcycle racing, something Burt Munro himself proved decades earlier.
How to enter
Raffle tickets are limited to 1200, priced at $100 each, with entries available online via the shop section at www.burtmunrochallenge.co.nz, as well as on-site at selected Burt Munro Challenge events.
The draw will take place on Sunday, 8 February, during the E Hayes Teretonga Sprint Races, with one lucky winner set to take home a race-prepped Yamaha R6 — and play a part in supporting the future of Kiwi road racing.
