A new Superbike Pathways Foundation aims to grow grassroots racing in the NZSBK championship, and there’s some serious talent behind the scheme to make it work!
A major new initiative aimed at developing young New Zealand motorcycle racers has been launched, with the creation of the Superbike Pathways Foundation (SPF) — an organisation dedicated to building stronger junior classes and clearer progression routes into top-level racing.
The foundation, launched by Star Insure NZ Superbike Championship promoter Mike Marsden, will initially focus on strengthening the Supersport 150 category — a crucial stepping stone for aspiring racers.
“Our key initial focus is growing the Supersport 150 class numbers and giving talented young riders a defined pathway,” says Marsden.
“Rider training will also be a focus, and we’re looking at ways to inspire youngsters – and their parents – to get involved with the series.”

The SPF’s long-term vision is to discover New Zealand’s next international racing star while helping as many young riders as possible progress toward the NZSBK Superbike class. Recognising that funding is often the biggest barrier, the foundation will provide annual grants and help connect riders with potential sponsors.
“We all know the big challenge for many young riders is funding,” Marsden explains. “We’re putting in place an initial fund to make grants available to suitable candidates and align them with sponsors where there’s a good fit.”
According to Marsden, several individuals have already pledged financial support for the initiative, but more partners are needed to help the programme reach its full potential.
“To have such backing at this early stage gives us the impetus and credibility to build something special,” he adds. “We’re calling on anyone interested in supporting the next generation of New Zealand racers to contact us via the website.”
Training and Development Focus
Another major SPF project will be a two-day Supersport 150 training camp led by Neil Chappel from the MiniGP Academy, which follows international 150cc development standards. While final details are still to be confirmed, the camp is expected to run in Tokoroa between Rounds 3 and 4 of the NZSBK Championship in March 2026.
The foundation is already encouraging riders with Supersport 150 aspirations to apply for assistance ahead of the 2026 series via www.nzsbk.co.nz.

World-Class Experience Behind the Project
The SPF Steering Group combines significant experience and racing pedigree, including Mike Marsden, Aaron Slight, Paul Treacy, Peter Donaldson, Grant Woolford, Peter Clifford, and Stu Avant.
“With ambassadors such as Aaron Slight, Paul Treacy, and Stu Avant — all of whom have competed at the highest levels — and guidance from Peter Clifford, current Director of Rider Development for the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, SPF brings world-class knowledge and experience to its mission,” Marsden says.
