New KTM RC490 Prototype Spotted

  • Comes with CFMoto-derived parts
  • Styling similar to 990 RC R
  • Likely to be a 2026 model

KTM’s long-discussed midsize lineup, intended to sit between its “390” singles and “790” twins, finally looks to be taking shape. Fresh spy shots confirm that a new twin-cylinder sportbike, expected to be the RC490, is edging closer to production.

Back in 2019, KTM openly revealed plans for a five-bike “490” family, to be co-developed with Indian partner Bajaj. The proposed lineup included the RC490 sportbike, a 490 Duke, 490 Adventure, 490 SMC R, and 490 SM T. Husqvarna was also set to benefit, with rebadged “501” variants such as the Norden adventure model, Svartpilen, Vitpilen, and a Supermoto. Bajaj was expected to manufacture these bikes, just as it does for KTM’s 125, 250, and 390 series.

Originally slated for a 2022 debut, the 490 project was shelved in 2023 over high development costs. KTM briefly shifted focus toward a larger “690” twin of around 650cc. But now, with the growing popularity of 400–500cc motorcycles and BMW’s new F 450 GS entering the market, the 490 project appears to have been revived.

KTM RC490

The new RC-style sportbike prototype seems to be running a 450cc parallel-twin, suggesting it will carry the long-rumoured “490” name. Much of this rapid progress could be thanks to KTM’s close ties with CFMoto. The Chinese manufacturer already builds KTM engines and bikes under a joint venture, and its 450cc twin, with a 270-degree crank and output of around 50 hp, seems to underpin this KTM prototype.

Several visible components, including the single-sided swingarm, footpegs, gear shifter, and sections of the trellis frame, appear identical to CFMoto’s new 450SR-R model. Even the sidestand and gearbox linkage match. Styling, however, is unmistakably KTM, with sharp fairings that echo the upcoming 990RC R and suspension supplied by WP.

If launched, the RC490 could be joined by a 490 Duke sharing the same platform. And we can expect it to make a debut next year as a 2026 or 2027 model.
