Indian Motorcycle unveils new Chief Vintage

  • Is part of the brand’s 125th anniversary celebrations
  • Inspired from the 1940s Chief models
  • Global launch timeline not revealed yet

Indian Motorcycle has begun its 125th anniversary celebrations with the launch of a new Chief Vintage cruiser, drawing inspiration from the brand’s Chief models of the 1940s.

Built on the existing Chief platform, the Chief Vintage is powered by Indian’s 1890cc air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 V-twin engine. The motor produces a claimed 156Nm of torque at 3,300rpm and is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The new model forms part of Indian’s “Never Finished” anniversary campaign, announced on January 7, marking 125 years since the company’s first motorcycle entered production in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The biggest changes come in the styling. The Chief Vintage features wide, sweeping front and rear fenders, 16-inch spoked wheels wrapped in balloon tyres, a curved vintage-style handlebar, and a floating solo seat, all designed to echo classic Indian models from more than eight decades ago. Optional extras include a pillion seat and backrest, vinyl saddlebags offering 19 litres of storage per side, rider footboards, front highway bars, and a windscreen.

Despite its retro appearance, the Chief Vintage features several modern elements. Riders can choose between three riding modes- Tour, Standard, and Sport, while LED lighting and ABS are fitted as standard. A four-inch circular colour TFT display is also included, featuring touchscreen functionality and updated software that Indian claims improves start-up and loading times by around 25 per cent.

Smartphone connectivity is available, bringing turn-by-turn navigation, call and text notifications, and ride information. The bike carries a 15.1-litre fuel tank and has a claimed wet weight of 327kg. Seat height is a low 686mm to aid low-speed control and accessibility.

Braking is handled by a single disc at each end, with a 298mm front rotor and four-piston calliper. Suspension consists of 46mm telescopic forks up front and preload-adjustable rear shocks, styled to give the appearance of a hardtail while retaining modern comfort and compliance.
