Indian Motorcycle to become independent as Polaris sells majority stake

  • Sold to LA, USA-based firm
  • To operate from existing bases
  • No word about new launches yet

Polaris Inc. has announced a significant restructuring move that will see Indian Motorcycle spun off as an independent company. The American powersports giant has reached a definitive agreement to sell a majority stake in the century-old motorcycle brand to Carolwood LP, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026.

Indian Motorcycle, which accounted for USD 478 million, around 7% of Polaris’ total revenue for the financial year ending June 2025 — will now operate as a standalone entity. While Polaris will retain a minor equity interest, full operational control will shift to Carolwood upon completion of the transaction.

According to Mike Speetzen, CEO of Polaris, the separation will allow both companies to “pursue sharper and faster innovation.” He added that Indian Motorcycle, with Carolwood’s backing, will have the flexibility to build further on its strong momentum in the premium motorcycle market. Andrew Shanfeld, Principal at Carolwood LP, said the firm plans to support Indian Motorcycle’s next growth phase, noting that the brand “deserves its share of independent focus and leadership” to expand its presence globally.

Indian Motorcycle will continue to operate from its existing bases in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Monticello, Minnesota, alongside its design and technology centre in Burgdorf, Switzerland. The company’s sales, service, and dealer operations are expected to remain unaffected through the transition.

The move signals a new chapter for one of America’s oldest motorcycle manufacturers — one that could see the storied brand chart its own course under new ownership while maintaining its heritage of performance and innovation.
