Honda debuts new CRF300L Red Edition

  • Special edition available in select markets
  • Comes with more off-road focused parts
  • Unlikely to make its way to NZ and AUS

Honda’s CRF300L has often been seen as a more approachable, entry-level dual-sport rather than a hardcore off-road machine. While some expected it to follow more closely in the footsteps of the CRF450L, Honda instead positioned it as a lightweight, beginner-friendly option powered by a 286cc single-cylinder engine producing around 27hp.

That engine is shared with the Honda Rebel 300, reflecting Honda’s broader strategy of using the same powerplants across multiple platforms. It’s a practical approach, but one that has also contributed to criticism of the CRF300L being underpowered and softly set up for serious off-road use. The same applies to its more adventure-focused sibling, the Honda CRF300L Rally.

Honda CRF300L Red Edition

Now, Honda has revealed a more focused version: the CRF300L Red Edition. Developed in collaboration with RedMoto, this version transforms the CRF300L into something much closer to what off-road enthusiasts had hoped for, though it comes with the limitation of being available only in Italy.

The Red Edition brings meaningful upgrades aimed at improving off-road capability. It supports a wider range of tyre sizes, with Pirelli MT21 RallyCross tyres fitted as standard. Suspension is significantly improved, featuring upgraded fork internals with new cartridges, enhanced hydraulics, DLC-coated components, and full adjustability. At the rear, an Öhlins shock replaces the standard unit, offering adjustable compression and rebound damping.

Protection and performance upgrades include an AXP skid plate, reinforced chain guard, and an optional titanium exhaust from SC Project. An UpMap control unit with Bluetooth connectivity is also part of the package, helping refine engine performance. Additional changes include a lighter rear section, racing-style graphics, and frame protection components made with Vibram materials.

For riders wanting even more, the Red Edition Evo adds further enhancements such as wider Ergal footpegs, silicone radiator hoses, upgraded sprockets, and lightweight aluminium components.

In many ways, this version highlights the untapped potential of the CRF300L platform. While the standard bike was always intended as an accessible entry point into dual-sport riding, the Red Edition shows that, with the right upgrades, it can evolve into a far more capable and serious off-road machine.
