FTN Motion Streetdog XR: A Kiwi Approach to Electric Riding

  • New Zealand company FTN Motion launches the Streetdog XR, hand-built in Hamilton
  • Updated electric commuter offers improved comfort, usability and urban performance
  • While electric bikes still divide opinion, this Kiwi-built machine deserves attention

Electric bikes might still divide opinion, but this Hamilton-built machine is doing things a little differently — and that’s worth recognising. With increased funding, a successful move into the Aussie market and new models in the pipeline, FTN is a true NZ success story.

A Different Kind of Electric Story

Let’s be honest — electric motorcycles still aren’t winning over most riders.

For many, they lack the character, the sound and the connection that makes riding special. And while the industry keeps pushing toward electrification, plenty of motorcyclists are happy to sit back and wait.

But every now and then, something comes along that’s a little harder to ignore.

Because while most electric bikes feel like they’re trying to replace what we already have, this one is doing something different — and it’s being built right here in New Zealand.

We’ve seen plenty of concepts, a few high-end machines and a lot of talk about the future, but for many riders the appeal just isn’t quite there yet. Whether it’s range, character or simply the experience itself, electrification hasn’t fully landed in the motorcycle world the way it has with cars.

But every now and then, something comes along that deserves a closer look — not because it’s trying to replace what we already love, but because it’s doing something genuinely different. And with the current fuel crisis seeing petrol rushing toward the $4 a litre region, there’s sure to be plenty of riders thinking about a cost-effective alternative to get to work.

That’s exactly what FTN Motion is doing with its new Streetdog XR.

Built in Hamilton, Not Shipped In

What immediately sets FTN Motion apart is where the bikes are made.

The Streetdog XR isn’t just designed in New Zealand — it’s hand-built in Hamilton, something that feels increasingly rare in a global motorcycle industry dominated by offshore production. In fact, they’re about 5 minutes down the road from BRM HQ, with a stylish unit in one of the Tron’s rapidly expanding business districts housing the team and the production facilities.

And that alone is worth acknowledging. For a country with a rich motorcycling history, seeing a manufacturer build bikes locally — and gain traction while doing so — is no small thing.

A Smarter Take on Urban Riding

The Streetdog XR builds on the original concept of the Streetdog 50 and the Streetdog 80 and adds a layer of usability and presence. It’s a more capable, slightly more rugged version of the original Streetdog, shaped by customer feedback and clearly aimed at making everyday riding easier. We tested the original Streetdog 50, and there’s no denying that you felt vulnerable on a small bike limited to 50km/h, even through city streets. So the slightly raised stance, combined with the bigger powerplant, will certainly help improve road presence.

It’s still very much an urban-focused machine, but the updates — from the taller stance to the wider bars and increased ground clearance — give it a bit more versatility and confidence on the road.

At its heart is a simple, effective electric setup. A rear hub motor delivers instant torque, while the removable battery can be charged from a standard household socket, with a short 5.5-hour charge time, bringing the battery back to 100%. There’s no gearbox to think about, no clutch, and very little to get in the way of just getting on and riding. It’s just twist the throttle and go, which gives the rider an instant kick from the electric motor.

That simplicity is really the point.

Designed for Real-World Commuting

Where the Streetdog XR makes the most sense is in the daily grind.

As congestion increases and fuel prices continue to bite, the idea of a lightweight, easy-to-use commuter starts to look more appealing. The XR’s 85km/h top speed and practical range put it squarely in that space — not designed for long-distance touring, but perfectly suited to getting across town quickly and efficiently.

Features like built-in storage – that big body is almost one massive storage compartment –  keyless start and the option to double the range with a second battery reinforce that focus. It’s not about performance in the traditional sense — it’s about making everyday transport simpler.

Growth Backed by Confidence

The launch of the XR follows a $2 million capital raise, giving the company the backing to expand further, including into Australia. Since launching in 2020, FTN Motion has already delivered more than 250 bikes, which might not sound like huge numbers — but for a small, locally based manufacturer, it represents solid progress. And with this further funding, there’s no doubt that the Kiwi team will be in an even better position to increase their success as a motorcycle start-up. And that’s not something you hear of much nowadays.

Why It Matters

The Streetdog XR isn’t going to convert every rider overnight. There will always be those who prefer the feel, sound and character of a traditional internal combustion engine — and that’s not going away any time soon.

But that’s not really the point here.

What FTN Motion is doing is creating a product that makes sense for a specific purpose, and doing it locally, with a clear identity and direction. In a market that’s still figuring out what electric motorcycling should look like, that’s something worth paying attention to.

And with the current economic climate and the sudden rush towards electric vehicles, those of us who love riding could well be tempted by the look and experience of the new Streetdog XR. For quick and entertaining transport around town, the new machine will undoubtedly be a blast. And the fact that you can charge it from a household plug and easily swap batteries if you need a quick boost in range makes it seriously versatile.

And then there’s the stylish design. The bodywork can be custom-painted if you want to be unique or use it as a marketing platform for your business. And with the special launch pricing of $9,990 (a saving of $4,000), it’s cheaper than ever to buy yourself a true Kiwi-built motorcycle. And that’s pretty cool.

The Bottom Line

You might not be ready to swap your weekend bike for an electric commuter — and that’s fair enough. But as a New Zealand-built solution to modern urban transport, the Streetdog XR deserves a bit of respect.
