CFMoto electric sportsbike patents revealed

  • Styling similar to the 450SR-R
  • Comes with innovative charging tech
  • No word about its launch timeline

The market for electric motorcycles hasn’t grown as quickly as many predicted, but development hasn’t stopped. A new patent shows that China’s CFMoto is working on an all-new electric sportbike, built from the ground up rather than adapted from an existing petrol model.

The images reveal a design that sets it apart from most current rivals. Instead of a conventional frame, the bike uses two large aluminium side plates that double as part of the chassis. These plates hold the battery, motor, swingarm, and headstock, while also serving as a sub-frame.

This setup has two big advantages. First, it could make battery swaps easier and faster. Instead of dismantling a frame, the design allows the battery to slide out from the side for maintenance or replacement. Second, the large plates act as a heat sink, helping to keep the battery cool, essential for maintaining performance during long rides.

CFMoto has also chosen a different location for the motor. Rather than placing it in front of the swingarm pivot, the motor sits behind it, inside the swingarm. This positioning gives more space for the battery, which could mean longer runtimes and potentially faster charging.

These changes may help tackle two of the biggest hurdles facing electric motorcycles today: limited range and slow charging. While the launch timeline is yet to be known, if CFMoto can deliver on both, its upcoming sportbike could be a more practical and appealing option than many of the current electric offerings.
