BMW teases new R20 on social channels

BMW Motorrad may have just given us our clearest look yet at what appears to be a production-bound R20 boxer roadster, after Motorrad boss Markus Flasch shared a teasing image on Instagram showing a row of mysterious retro-styled motorcycles.

Posted on May 7, the image shows Flasch standing alongside six near-identical roadsters under the caption: “now we are torquing”,  a phrase that feels far from accidental given BMW’s long-standing association with torque-rich boxer engines.

If these bikes are indeed production-ready versions of the previously revealed R20 concept, there are some noticeable signs that BMW has moved well beyond show-bike territory.

Compared to the dramatic concept first shown at Villa d’Este, the motorcycles pictured appear significantly more road-focused. Visible additions include a more complete exhaust system, reflectors, a number plate hanger, and bar-end mirrors, all practical details that strongly suggest homologation work is already underway.

The overall design, however, seems to retain much of the concept’s appeal. The exposed shaft drive remains visible on the right-hand side, reinforcing BMW’s commitment to mechanical honesty and premium engineering cues. The bikes also appear to wear 17-inch spoked wheels, blending retro aesthetics with modern road-bike proportions. Interestingly, tyre choice may reveal that development is still ongoing. Several bikes appear to be fitted with Michelin Road 6 touring tyres, while one machine in the centre wears noticeably different tread. That could suggest BMW is still finalising setup details, potentially evaluating different tyre specifications or riding intentions before production sign-off.

Of course, BMW has yet to officially confirm exactly what these motorcycles are. But when the CEO casually posts six near-finished prototypes on social media, complete with road-going details already fitted, it feels less like teasing a possibility and more like quietly confirming what’s coming next.
