World Supercross Championship Axes 2026 Season – NZ and Australian Rounds Cancelled

The FIM World Supercross Championship has pulled the plug on the rest of its 2026 season, effectively cancelling the planned rounds in Christchurch and Australia’s Gold Coast as organisers scramble to secure new investment.

  • World Supercross ends its 2026 season after just one round.
  • Christchurch’s December 5 and Gold Coast’s November 21 rounds are cancelled.
  • Auckland’s separate AUSX event remains scheduled for October 31 at North Harbour Stadium.

The FIM World Supercross Championship has announced the immediate cancellation of the remainder of its 2026 season, bringing an abrupt end to what was supposed to be its biggest international campaign yet.

And for New Zealand fans, that means the much-anticipated World Supercross Grand Prix scheduled for Christchurch on December 5 will no longer take place.

The Australian round, scheduled for November 21 at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast, has also been cancelled, along with the remaining events on the international calendar.

It’s a disappointing development for fans who were looking forward to seeing some of the world’s leading supercross riders competing in this part of the world.

JUST ONE ROUND COMPLETED

The 2026 championship was originally planned as a six-round international series, taking World Supercross to venues across five continents.

However, only the opening round in Calgary, Canada, on August 8 actually took place.

That event saw Cooper Webb claim victory in the SX1 class, while Max Anstie took the SX2 win.

The first indication that things weren’t going according to plan came in September when organisers cancelled the British Grand Prix in Birmingham, citing the need to secure further investment.

At the time, World Supercross maintained that discussions with potential investors were progressing.

Now, less than three weeks later, the entire remaining season has been abandoned.

INVESTMENT TALKS CONTINUE

In an official statement issued on October 7, World Supercross confirmed that the championship would conclude its 2026 season immediately.

Organisers said they remain in advanced discussions with potential investors regarding the future of the series, but have decided not to proceed with the remaining rounds while those negotiations continue.

The championship insists it still believes in the concept of a global supercross series and remains hopeful that new investment can provide a platform for its future.

However, no timeframe has been given for a possible return, and there is currently no confirmation of what a 2027 championship might look like.

For a series that was attempting to establish itself as a genuinely international alternative to the established American supercross scene, it’s another significant setback.

CHRISTCHURCH AND GOLD COAST MISS OUT

The cancellation is particularly disappointing for New Zealand, which had been scheduled to host the final round of the championship at Christchurch’s new One New Zealand Stadium on December 5.

Christchurch’s One NZ Stadium had been scheduled to host the World Supercross season finale on December 5.

The event would have brought international supercross racing to the South Island, providing Kiwi fans with a rare opportunity to see leading international competitors racing on home soil.

Across the Tasman, the Gold Coast was preparing to host the Australian Grand Prix at Cbus Super Stadium on November 21.

Both events have now fallen victim to the championship’s financial uncertainty.

World Supercross has not yet provided detailed information regarding ticket refunds or arrangements for affected spectators.

Fans who have already purchased tickets should check with the relevant event organisers or ticketing providers for further information.

AUCKLAND AUSX EVENT STILL GOING AHEAD

Importantly, the cancellation of World Supercross does not mean the upcoming Australian Supercross Championship event in Auckland has been cancelled.

The Boost Mobile AUSX Supercross Championship is a separate series, and its Auckland round remains scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at North Harbour Stadium.

That event is expected to feature Kiwi star Cole Davies racing in front of his home crowd, alongside leading Australian and international riders.

So while the Christchurch World Supercross event is off the calendar, New Zealand fans still have a major supercross meeting to look forward to later this month.

WHAT NEXT FOR WORLD SUPERCROSS?

World Supercross was launched in 2022 with ambitious plans to establish a truly global championship, attracting leading riders and taking stadium supercross racing to new markets.

The series has undergone changes in ownership and management during its relatively short history, and the latest announcement raises further questions about its long-term future.

Organisers say discussions with potential investors are continuing and that further information will be released when available.

Whether that leads to a revived championship in 2027 remains to be seen.

For now, though, the 2026 World Supercross Championship is over after just one round.

And unfortunately, New Zealand and Australian fans are among those missing out.
