Updated KTM 390 Range likely to be launched in New Zealand soon

  • New KTM 390 range timeline revealed
  • Includes 390 SMC R, Enduro R and Adventure R
  • Could be launched around September

After a series of delays brought on by internal restructuring and financial turbulence, KTM has now officially outlined a revised launch schedule for its highly anticipated 2025 learner-approved 390 series, including the Adventure, Enduro, and SMC variants. While the launch timeline is for Australia, we can expect the motorcycles to reach New Zealand soon after.

Leading the charge is the 2025 KTM 390 SMC R, which is confirmed to arrive in July. It is expected to be joined by the 390 Enduro R and the 390 Adventure R in August. On the other hand, the more road-oriented 390 Adventure X is expected to follow later in November.

Powering all these models is KTM’s newly reengineered LC4c single-cylinder engine, designed from the ground up for improved performance, durability, and efficiency. The redesign includes a lighter cylinder head and a more compact valve cover, lowering the engine’s centre of mass. An updated thermostat, now directly attached to the head, enhances thermal stability across varying conditions.

Additionally, KTM has revised the fuel injection system, with injectors now spraying directly into the intake valves to improve atomisation and reduce carbon build-up. These changes result in cleaner combustion, greater fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.

Service intervals have also been modernised. The first check comes at 1,000 km, followed by major services every 10,000 km, and valve inspections at 20,000 km—a notable step up in user convenience.

2025 KTM 390 Adventure Lineup

2025 KTM 390 ADVENTURE R

Purpose-built for off-roaders, the R model features WP APEX 43 mm open cartridge forks with 30 clicks of adjustment for both compression and rebound. The rear shock—a WP APEX separate piston unit—adds 20 clicks of rebound adjustment, with preload tweakable via a tool. The result is a highly tuneable suspension setup that can handle diverse terrain.

Targeting road-going users and shorter riders, the X variant boasts a lower seat height and simplified suspension. It features non-adjustable WP APEX 43 mm forks with 200 mm of travel, and a basic emulsion shock at the rear that allows only for preload adjustment. 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels favour paved road comfort and predictability.

KTM 390 SMC R

The 390 Enduro R is KTM’s dedicated dual-sport machine, designed for true dirt enthusiasts. It rolls on spoked wheels with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tyres—specifically 90/90-21 and 140/80-18 sizes—providing high ground clearance of 272 mm. With a generous 230 mm of suspension travel, this bike is ready to tackle gnarly trails and serious off-road duties.

At the sharp end of the 390 family is the SMC R, KTM’s street-focussed Supermoto weapon. Rolling on 17-inch spoked wheels wrapped in 110/70 front and 150/60 rear tyres, this version is aimed at riders looking to combine urban agility with trackday thrills.

Braking is handled by a 320 mm front rotor with a radial-mounted caliper and a 240 mm rear disc, delivering sharp stopping power perfect for slide-happy antics. Long-travel suspension and nimble geometry make this a top pick for aspiring supermoto enthusiasts.
