New Yamaha electric superbike design patents filed

  • Yamaha EV superbike drawings revealed
  • Gets an air-cooled battery pack
  • No word about the production version

As of 2024, Yamaha offers power-assisted bicycles and a few e-scooters. The new patent drawings fuels the dream of an electric superbike with a large motor and battery pack. Interestingly, the battery case is said to achieve enough cooling for eight batteries through air-cooling. Liquid cooling has become the way to go in combustion engines since it gives more temperature control. However, radiators, pipes and sensors add size and weight- something we have also seen in Ducati’s Moto-E race machines.

On the other hand, air-cooling is relatively simpler with easy packaging and offers lower weight while having performance and range advantages. The Yamaha electric superbike includes a large electric motor fitted at the far back with the centreline behind the front sprocket. This allows space for the battery case and a rear suspension that’s shifted upward.

While Yamaha hasn’t revealed any expected power figures or tech features, the drawing patents also don’t reveal any launch timeline. However, it is a great sign to know that a large-scale manufacturer is still utilising funds to develop high-performance electric motorcycles.
