From the 'what were you thinking?' file

The race got away to a dramatic and controversial start. Dani Pedrosa led into the first corner, followed by Stoner and Lorenzo until Alvaro Bautista came charging up the far inside of the approach to the corner far, far too hot, braking way too late to make the corner. The Spaniard lay down his bike and slid directly into Lorenzo, removing the pair from the race. A move which will see him penalised at the next round. Cal Crutchlow narrowly avoided going down in the incident, but managed to regain his composure and finish fifth. With Lorenzo out, the main battle at the front was soon over, as Stoner took the lead and finished almost 5 seconds clear of Pedrosa. Dovizioso rounded out the podium just ahead of Spies.
