Back
Hampton Downs will go live in October!

Yes - This month!
It looks like the wait for Hampton Downs to come on line is coming to an
end. The final layer of seal is all that is required before the venue can be
used and this task is due to start this weekend, fingers crossed. This is a
defining event, as once this process is started they will not stop until it is
finished, so that there are no seams in the surface. This will take 6-8 days
to complete.
MEGNZ has managed to get an additional day to add to the Ride Day
calendar, so we now have Thursday, 29th October to add to Friday 30th that
was already in the calendar. Space is still available, so please contact us if
you want to attend one of these days.
Brand New Tracks
As a coach with the California Superbike School, I have been fortunate
enough to ride on racetracks all over the world - about 30 in total. Some of
them famous like Laguna Seca, Phillip Island and Catalunya. Others not so
famous: Calafat in Spain, Serres in Greece and Rudskogen in Norway.
Some tracks have an awe about them that makes you feel obliged to love it
and you leave loving it whether it was great or not. Laguna Seca is like this.
Yes the corkscrew is a pair of awesome corners like no others in the world,
but the rest of the track is nothing special, and the facilities are not great.
Other tracks have no reputation to be met and no preconceived ideas are
planted, thus allowing a rider to make their own decision about it. For me
Rudskogen in Norway was like this. It is in the middle of nowhere, poorly
signposted and nobody has ever heard of it, but it is 1.75kms long with 11
turns that have huge complexity and elevation changes to dream about. It
is an awesome track that ranks up there with my favourites.
It is very rare that you get the opportunity to be one of the very first to
experience a brand new race track, or the chance to form your own opinion
of the track before the masses tell you what you should think about it. You
now have the chance to do exactly this with the opening of Hampton
Downs Motorsport Park.
The 2.8km circuit shows a lot of promise to be a great track, with some
exciting elevation changes and complex blind turns, not to mention the flat
out sweeping front straight. There is no track like this in New Zealand, and
as yet, nobody has been able to go around it in anger. However, October
will see an end to its virginity and you can be one of the first to ride the
track and play a part in creating Motorsport history in New Zealand.
