Give it up

It’s hard to believe summer is already drawing to a close, despite the rather hot and sticky weather we’ve been having of late. Like many of you we’ve been making the most of the great riding conditions, then it’s hard not to with such a busy calendar at this time of year. There’s the national road racing series, the Classic Festival at Pukekohe, the Bike Rider Summer Series, the Auckland MCC Champs, BRM’s hometown race - Paeroa’s Battle of the Streets, not to mention various club rides, adventure rides, custom bike shows, bucket racing and track days to keep us entertained over summer. In fact we’re a bit spoilt for choice this time of year – if only I could be in two places at once!
One thing that’s come to my attention through attending a lot of these events is the tireless work that goes in behind the scenes by the people who help out, many if not most of them volunteers. I was one of said punters who took a day out of my schedule to help out at the Battle of the Streets, as did every single one of the marshals, Auckland Motorcycle Club Officials and various other staff, whom without such the meeting just wouldn’t take place. I’ve experienced first hand at Paeroa and at all the races, club rides and trail rides I attend both through working for the mag and on a personal level, just how important to our various codes of motorcycling volunteers are.
The passion that many of these unsung heroes have for motorcycling, in whatever form, is what keeps our calendar busy, your choice of events to attend wide and varied, and the multitude of motorcycling clubs in NZ humming along every year. Many of you will no doubt, have donned a fluro vest or club hat and helped out at some stage or on a regular basis, but if you haven’t, maybe it’s about time you did. After all, you’re mixing with like-mined individuals with a passion for motorcycling, and invariably you’ll have a lot of fun in the process.
For those who already give up their time for free for the betterment of motorcycling in New Zealand, we at BRM salute and thank you. We couldn’t have as much fun as we do without you.
